Similar to EMTs, I show up as a first-responder. More specifically, I address the traumas and layered impact of homelessness. Often I don’t know how the story ends for the person in need of care. I just do my best to perform lifesaving measures using coffee and compassion to evoke agency whenever I can.
That’s why I’m so excited to highlight move-in day at The Melody because I got to witness the other side of triage–the culmination of all those mini (many) acts of love. The Melody is Atlanta’s first rapid-housing development made up entirely of repurposed shipping containers. The photos certainly don’t do it justice. But I’m honored to capture this moment and be part of it as well.
So how did we get here?
In January 2022, Church of the Common Ground took a financial leap of faith and partnered with Intown Cares to organically embed a social worker into our weekly programming–25% of our annual budget supports finding permanent housing for our parishioners experiencing homelessness.
To date, as a church without walls, we’ve helped house more than 70 parishioners. But on this day, this very special occasion, we celebrate Jimmy, Esther, Wanda, Robert, and Khalid: Welcome Home!!!

Each of these individuals inspire me–their resilience reminds me of the power of community. Grateful for our phenomenal team, especially Matthew Reed, and for all who supported this initiative. I can truly say my heart is FULL.
Please join me in celebrating by supporting this good and vital work!
More updates to follow as I continue to unpack this life-changing experience. Until then…
This is my offering–with deep gratitude.
