What is HCR?
Hot Chocolate Ramen highlights creative cuisines that come from meager means. It is part of the Radical Hospitalitea–an initiative to digitally house the stories of unhoused residents.
Where did it start?
Hot Chocolate Ramen began as a social media campaign for a graduate course at Agnes Scott College. The title is inspired by an unhoused citizen of Atlanta—this is one of their favorite meals. Though the flavor profile is complex, it brings them comfort and joy.
The Mission:
To create an equitable third space by bringing stories from the fringes to the forefront, while supporting unhoused citizens with dignity and sharing meals crafted through adversity.
What’s your Hot Chocolate Ramen?
Episode 1: Robert Lee shares his version of Hot Chocolate Ramen–a banana with an oatmeal cookie. He also shares what he’s grateful for; naming the importance of being an advocate for others in spite of the circumstances before you. 🔥🍫🍜
Episode 2: Collard Greens with Smoked Turkey Tails
Ms. Bertha braves the cold weather to share her version of Hot Chocolate Ramen–collard greens with smoked turkey tails. She also takes a moment to reflect on her personal experience with homelessness and finds gratitude as she settles into her new home.
Episode 3: Burnt BBQ Sloppy Joe
Anthony shares his take on a sloppy joe–the more burnt the better! He believes, “It’s what we do” that makes for a good life and also opens up about the recent passing of his father while holding gratefulness for the time they spent together.
Episode 4: Ambrosia Fruit Salad
Food of the gods? Thomas seems to think so! Ambrosia (fruit salad) is his go-to for comfort and joy. The only thing sweeter than his version of Hot Chocolate Ramen is his freedom, for which he is deeply grateful.
