I met Robert in 2021 while serving coffee at Church of the Common Ground. I wanted to step up my street barista skills, so I asked him if he’d try a Holy Roller, which is a mocha—we just roll with whatever creamer we have. He enthusiastically said yes, and since then, I’ve been making a Holy Roller for him whenever he stops by!
Robert is like that.
If I have an idea, he supports it—even if neither of us knows where it will lead. He was the first to say yes to recording an episode of Hot Chocolate Ramen.
On many occasions, he’s shared how that interview renewed his purpose in helping others despite his experience with homelessness. I do not take that for granted, especially when sharing in a moment such as this:
Robert (((finally))) has a home of his own!
His willingness to say yes to something new indirectly put him on a path toward home—toward something greater than himself.
It’s been a journey.
Yet, as André De Shields eloquently states, “The top of one mountain is the bottom of the next, so keep climbing.”
But first, dear Robert, REST.
You have done the work. You have prayed the prayers. Those mountains aren’t going anywhere. So, take in this moment and just be.
You deserve it.
